Join us for an intimate tour of the rare book room at the New York Academy of Medicine, where you will have the opportunity to see highlights from our extensive collection of medical botany books.

People have been using plants to make remedies for centuries. Visitors who join us for this tour will have the chance to see a few of these beautifully illustrated medical botany books, including a late 15th century Ortus Sanitatis, Leonhardt Fuch’s Historia Stirpium from 1542, Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal, one of Nicolas Culpepper’s herbalsJacob Bigelow’s American Medical Botany and its rival, William Barton’s Vegetable Materia Medica, and other highlights.

The New York Academy of Medicine is home to one of the most significant historical libraries in medicine and public health in the world, safeguarding the heritage of medicine to inform the future of health.

  • Space is limited and advance registration is required
  • The building is wheelchair accessible, with an entry ramp and an elevator
